A gerenuk always looks slightly improbable, as though elegance has been stretched almost to breaking point. The neck is too long, the legs too fine, the head too delicate for the hard thorn country it inhabits — and then it rises onto its hind legs and becomes unforgettable. Balanced upright beneath an acacia, reaching calmly into branches other antelope cannot touch, the gerenuk seems less like a grazer than a browser reimagined by desert logic. In the dry north of Kenya and across the Horn, it brings a strange, weightless grace to some of Africa’s harshest country.
