A desert lion at dusk feels less like a sighting than an apparition. The heat begins to loosen, the gravel plains cool, and the last light turns the dry riverbeds the colour of ash and gold. Then a shape appears where there seemed to be nothing: lean, long-legged, sand-coloured, moving with the severe grace of an animal that has learned to survive on the edge of possibility. In Namibia’s desert country, the lion is not the easy monarch of green savannah. It is hunger, distance, endurance, and shadow — crossing the evening as if the desert itself had briefly taken form.
