World Travel Awards: Africa's Leading Safari Lodge 2025 gives Greystoke Mahale a recent formal marker of recognition. Its wider reputation rests on its Mahale Mountains setting, incredible remote wilderness setting and access to both beach and forest.
Greystoke Mahale sits in Mahale Mountains, Tanzania, within remote forested mountains falling to Lake Tanganyika. At the lakeshore, white sandy beaches contrast the forest's dappled sunlight at the start of each day.
From the UK, travellers usually fly into Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Dar es Salaam, depending on whether the itinerary focuses on the northern or southern circuit.
Light aircraft from Arusha takes 3.5 hours followed by a 90 minute dhow ride on Lake Tanganyika to approach Mahale. The camp is 60 kilometres from any road. Flights are currently on scheduled on Mondays and Thursdays.

Set on the edge of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world, guests can head out on an iconic dhow for a spot of deep-water swimming, wildlife spotting or kayaking. Alternatively the forests are home to wild chimpanzees and other primates.
