Overview

What we love about Khensani River Lodge

Khensani River Lodge is the newest addition to the Tengile MalaMala Collection, opening on 20 December 2026. Its name means “gratitude” in Shangaan and reflects a community partnership at the heart of the project. The lodge slopes gently toward the Sand River, with a nine-suite layout, private plunge pools and architecture that draws from local materials, craft and the slow restorative pace of river life.

Awards

What awards & Acclaims have they received?

Khensani River Lodge is a new opening rather than an award-led property. Its significance lies in being the sixth Tengile MalaMala Collection lodge, a nine-suite riverfront project shaped by community joint ownership, architectural restraint and direct access to MalaMala’s Sand River wilderness.

Location

Sabi Sands, South Africa

Khensani River Lodge sits within MalaMala Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger and positioned along the Sand River. The reserve offers a 13,500-hectare traversing area and unfenced wilderness where wildlife moves freely between MalaMala, the Sabi Sand landscape and Kruger National Park.

From the UK, access is usually via Johannesburg or Cape Town, followed by a scheduled flight, road transfer or charter depending on the reserve.

South Africa is generally one of the easiest safari countries logistically, especially for families and first-time travellers.

Perfect for The Curator & The Rewilder

Khensani River Lodge speaks first to design-conscious travellers through its architecture, material palette, river-facing composition and high privacy. The Curator adds The Rewilder through its quiet pace, stillness, deck-led river life and restorative atmosphere. Together, the fit suits travellers who want the MalaMala/Sand River wildlife experience shaped by the lodge’s particular rhythm rather than by spectacle alone.

Accommodation

What kinds of rooms are available?

Khensani River Lodge has nine luxury suites arranged to maximise proximity to the Sand River, with most living spaces opening onto cascading decks beneath mature river trees.

9 x Luxury Suites

Approximately 223m², with private verandah, private plunge pool, indoor and outdoor shower, bath, air conditioning, personal bar and coffee station. Two guests per suite.
