Rwanda delivers Africa’s most polished gorilla trekking experience — and it does it in the most compact geography of any safari destination on the continent. RwandAir flies direct from London Heathrow six to seven times a week in under nine and a half hours. Kigali is two and a half hours from both the gorillas and a Big Five safari park. I’ve trekked through Volcanoes National Park’s bamboo forest in morning mist and driven Akagera’s savannah the same week — the contrast between primates and plains game, all within a country smaller than Belgium, is what makes Rwanda distinct. Four safari regions span volcanic rainforest, ancient montane canopy, resurgent savannah, and the shores of one of Africa’s Great Lakes. For milestone travellers, honeymoon couples, and anyone who wants the world’s most exclusive primate encounter without rough roads or long transfers, Rwanda is the destination.
Rwanda sits just south of the equator and works year-round. Two dry seasons frame the calendar.
June to September is the primary dry season and the most popular window for gorilla trekking. Trails are drier, trekking is less physically demanding, and Akagera’s game viewing is at its best. This is also the busiest and most expensive period.
January to February is the most underrated window. The short dry season delivers excellent gorilla trekking conditions, lower lodge rates, and easier permit availability than July–August.
March to May brings the long rains. Gorilla trekking still operates daily, but trails are muddy and treks are more demanding. Rates drop and permits are more available. Nyungwe’s chimpanzees are easier to find when fruit trees are in season.
For UK families: July–August school holidays align with peak dry season. October half-term is shoulder — variable but workable. Easter falls in the long rains and is less reliable for gorilla trekking comfort.
Rwanda’s safari formats are anchored by primate trekking. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a guided forest walk, minimum age 15, with one hour spent with the gorilla family. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe operates daily with a minimum age of 12. Game drives run in Akagera, along with boat safaris on Lake Ihema and night drives with spotlight.
Walking safaris are available in Akagera. The Nyungwe canopy walkway is open to visitors of all ages. Cultural experiences include the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village near Volcanoes NP and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Helicopter transfers between Kigali and Volcanoes NP are available for travellers seeking the fastest route to the gorillas.
A Safari Circle Rwanda itinerary typically costs £10,000–£18,000 per person for 5–10 nights. That includes accommodation, gorilla and other activity permits, park fees, transfers, and meals.
Rwanda is a premium-priced destination. The gorilla permit alone is $1,500 per person per trek — the highest in Africa. Luxury lodges near Volcanoes NP (Singita Kwitonda, Wilderness Bisate) command $1,500–$3,000+ per person per night. The permit cost is a conservation investment: it funds gorilla protection, community development, and Rwanda’s national park system directly.
Not included: international flights (London–Kigali direct on RwandAir from approximately £890–£1,100 return), travel insurance, and gratuities. UK citizens can enter Rwanda visa-free for up to 90 days — no visa application required.
Milestone celebrations: A gorilla trek at Singita Kwitonda or Wilderness Bisate is the most exclusive wildlife encounter money can buy. For a 50th birthday or significant anniversary, Rwanda’s combination of emotional intensity and five-star luxury is unmatched.
Honeymoon couples: Rwanda suits couples who want depth over duration. Five to six nights delivers gorillas, Akagera’s Big Five, and Lake Kivu — a compact, high-impact honeymoon that fits around work schedules.
Returning safari travellers: If you’ve done East Africa’s savannah circuit, Rwanda’s primates offer something no game drive can replicate. Pair gorillas with Akagera for a safari that redefines what “wildlife” means.
Families with teenagers: Gorilla trekking’s minimum age is 15. For families with older teenagers, this is a genuinely transformative shared experience. Akagera works well for younger teens (no age restriction on game drives).

UK citizens can enter Rwanda visa-free for up to 90 days. No application is required — your passport is stamped on arrival. An East Africa Tourist Visa covering Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya costs $100 if you plan to combine countries. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.
Rwanda is one of Africa’s safest countries for tourists. Kigali is consistently ranked among the cleanest and most orderly cities on the continent. Safari regions have strong safety records. The UK FCDO provides specific travel advice that Safari Circle monitors continuously.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country classified as at risk of yellow fever transmission. It is not required for direct flights from the UK. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for Akagera and lower-altitude areas. Volcanoes NP and Nyungwe sit at high altitude where malaria risk is minimal. Consult a travel health clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure.
Moderately fit. Rwanda’s gorilla treks are generally shorter and less steep than Uganda’s Bwindi treks. Treks range from one to four hours depending on the gorilla family. Porters are available and strongly recommended. The minimum age is 15. You can request a gorilla family matched to your fitness level.
A gorilla-focused trip works in 3–4 nights. Adding Akagera or Nyungwe brings the total to 6–8 nights. A comprehensive Rwanda safari covering all three parks plus Lake Kivu takes 9–10 nights. Rwanda’s compact size means no travel day is wasted.
